Howard Cooke - Edge Lane - Liverpool - 1996. C-Type Print
In 1996 I was spending a lot of time in Liverpool. It probably was the best city for skateboarding in the UK at the time.
I remember a whole lot of us including Howard and his brother Adam turned up at Edge Lane on this day after skating in town all day. This is probably early eveing and the light was just perfect for a moment.
Things developed really quickly on this session and I realised I needed to be ready to shoot because H was already charging.
To get enough space around the quarter pipe I had to walk outside the park and the park fence and became part of the picture being the blurred red lines are in the foreground. For anyone who knows Edge Lane this might have always been obvious and add something to the picture but it’s always slightly bothered me slightly.
The image was used on the front cover of Sidewalk and then as a full page in Dysfunctional, the seminal 1990’s book on global skateboard culture.
It was also used as part of No Comply at Somerset House in Summer 2021.
